Thanks Ken . I think we are dealing with either:

A). Two different dies both having the same disjointed stem on the leaf second from bottom on the left side as the badge faces the viewer. As evidenced from the difference in the eagles neck angle and beak.

B). One die that was retooled. I say this as a possibility because the wreath characteristics are, in my opinion, exactly the same. Also the reverse hardware on these two IAB's is always the same hinge combined with either an oblong or circular catch plate and "c" shaped round wire catch. I should say that the same design IAB has rarely also used a thin rectangular carch plate as well........

Now that I have thoroughly read and reread Franks wonderful book, I have a theory. Based on Time Curley's OM marked IAB I think a strong case can be made to tie Franks unknown GAB maker #11 to OM. Pictured on page 302-303 you can see the same smirking eagle, horizontal striations, hinge, catch plate and catch on GAB 1.28.1........all characteristics of the IAB Ken posted for us.

Here is an OM type 2 from my files that displays those features in common with GAB unknown maker 11.

          Obverse showing characteristic smirking eagle.

              Dear Greg,

Certainly a valid observation and it could be that both badges you mention were made by the same maker. I was as thrilled as most when Tim's OM marked badge was found. The trouble with it is that there is another OM marked IAB that has a different design. In my opinion these OM marks can only explained as "distributor" marks, but not neccessarily as maker marks.

The GAB type you refer to is suspected to be made by Alois Rettenmaier, but it cannot be 100% confirmed yet. Recently that company went bankcrupt and a couple of these GABs were sold by dealers who claimed to have received them from the AR stocks. This would possibly make the IAB above Rettenmaier as well.
              Cheers, Frank

Frank, very good point....there is only those two OM marked IAB's of a very different design........I overlooked that fact in my zeal .

It is nice to possibly tie this IAB with that GAB maker though, and thank you for the additional information .
