    "Hey Joe"

Is there a date on the Assmann catalogue?? I noticed that the pilot's badges were early ones.

    Cheers,

      Hi Tim,

Negative on the date, any thoughts on when you think it was printed, as well as value?

BTW,I welcomed in the New Year with your suggested Jaeger mixes. Nice buzz , bad headache.

      Later,
      JD

PS My secret plan is to invite Eric to the resaurant for show and tell on comparing some pieces from our LW collection. He just recieved an early Type 1 Junker Pilot badge. Well a few Jaegers and he will trade it for an Eastern Front medal.

Ancient One reporting in: Yup, that looks like one of the original S&L catalogs sold over here in 1969 for $3.50. (I got mine from Peter Hlinka in NYC.) When they started hitting 50 bucks a couple of years ago, I understand somebody reprinted them, but those should look different.

The Assmann (flesh colored spiral binding) is NOT an original. I bought mine fresh off the presses around 1970-71 for something enormous like 7 bucks. They may even have come from the infamous Hollywood Military Hobbies. The only dinosaur older than me here is Histaria-- he'd probably remember the date and price better,

Aside from its waaay over the top covers, check out things like the SS runes there-- not the original METAL badge maker's stuff at all, just "jazzed up" for the Late-Nixon Years collecting crowd.

          Hello Rick,

Hmmmmmm. .... so the Assman one I have is a reprint? I have no problem with that.

I do have a question in reference to the binding, mine is held together with black tread weaved through rectangular loops. Sound like the re-print? Also do you know what an orginal would look like as well a how much it would cost., just curious. This will still serve as a valuable reference piece for me. Hmmm..... it really looks original.

          Best Regards,
          Joe

Hello Joe, Our lovable Ricky's correct about the Assman catalog. The originals are actually hardcover as I understand. I have only ever seen one. The "loops" you have on yours were cut outs and the whole catalog was originally held together with a plastic "comb" if you will. The Velo Bind company still sells the machines and plastic combs to assemble books in that fashion. If you have one of the Cone enameled badges reference books, it is held together in the same way. Nice S & L catalog though!

Oh yeah, an Eastern Front Medal? Not while I still have my wits about me! Well, a few Long Island Ice Teas and you might have a chance!

                  Hello Eric,

Thank you for posting a pic for me, Hmmm............L.I. Iced Tea huh.....not a bad price for an early Junker

                  Hi Richard, the S & L is a reprint.

                  Thanks all,
                  JD

Joe, that's a good looking reprint. Here's some scans of a couple I lucked into in a book purchase. The first is an edged weapon catalog. Until I got this catalog some time ago, I never realized you could order swords according to length in order to fit your height. Also take note of the exaggerated eagles on the picture od the officer. The second is a general supply catalog.

Richard: any RIBBON BAR stuff in that Rank & Fritz catalog? Am always trying to ID specific makers of distinctive swords, the huge square winged Wehrmacht long service eagles, etc.

BTW, that is one CREEPY looking dude in the dagger catalog "artwork." Looks like the artiste must have been an "enemy sympathizer!"

The height/length of sword blades was much more complicated in Imperial times, when different units had different requirements: some cavalry straight bladed swords were MUCH longer (for basically using like a lance) than curved, slashing sabers. Likewise, there were different TYPES of swords for carrying at one's thigh and leaving strapped to horse "furniture," so the same officer might have two different sized swords.

Basic rule of thumb, with your hand on a sword hilt at your left pants pocket, at a natural carrying angle, is the drag JUST off the ground? That's about normal wear, and tells you (if you're lucky enough to have a named or presentation piece) how tall the original wearer was.

                          Hello Richard,

Thank you, kindley for sharing the pics of your catalog, interesting stuff.

Also,Rick thank you for the tid-bits of information, you always seem to come up with something new and interesting. I would be curious to know what the German Chef knife catalog was like. Was the size of the sword also an exstention of ones........never mind.

                          Best Regards,

Rick, sorry to say the catalog is mostly of "normal" stuff for the military (grooming supplies, sweets, paper goods, Reservisten items, etc). No real military items and no ribbon bars.

so the binding on mine is one way to tell a reprint, correct?
