A closer look at the hinge. You can see the three crimps, left, right, and bottom.

The side shot is where it gets interesting. I've never seen anything like this on a badge. Do you think it has been replaced?

For whats its worth Bagdes were sent back to factories(any factory) for hinge and catch repairs...looks like a later repair?

            Hi Don,

I don't think it is a repair as the crimps would have to be die forged with the badge and look specifically made for this hinge. These crimps don't look tampered with at all, which I think you would see if it were a repair.

            Very cool and interesting!

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

              Dear Don,

I have seen another one of these and assume the hinge is original to the badge. It might even be the first variation of this type, because the crimps on all subsequent types do not really make sense anymore as they do not "hold" the hinge which was soldered later on. A pity I did not get good pics of one of those first variation badges for my book. Maybe you can help for the second edition of the GAB book!
              Cheers, Frank
