Nickel Silver "L/51" IAB

Hi Guys,

Well finally managed to add another very early IAB to my collection. Only had two of them in my files, one belonging to Greg if I'm not mistaken, and had them marked as buntmetall badges.

Much to my surprise these badges aren't made out of buntmetall at all but out of high quality nickel silver just like the Porsche IAB

This badge features the known L/51 and üü design but since we really can't be sure what üü actualy stands for, I'm feeling more confident with attributing this badge for the time being to Wiedmann.

Well Philippe, that is an awesome badge. Thank you for clearing this up for me, I have wondered recenttly about this badge. I had been incorrectly thinking it was buntmetal, and it just didn't match up with the others I have. I haven't been home to handle these badges in a year so all I have to go by is pics. And we all know I struggle with telling the difference from pics alone. But now I think I have it straight .

Do you mean with "plated" the wrap arround hinge.

That indeed is bizar isn't it to see such a later type of hinge on an early badge.

I can only assume that it was more difficult to solder on nickel silver than on buntmetal (tombak). Don't know if you can see it on my reverse scan but they also squashed the catchbase completely to give them a bit more of a base to put solder under.

It's also interesting to see that on some of the early NS Porsche PAB's they were already using the later wrap arround hinge but of course these Porsches also exist with other hinges. I have seen quite a few early Porsches but this is only the third hollow L/51 I have seen so it would be interesting to learn if maybe there are examples out there with an earlier type of hinge.

Almost forgot, the only known Nickel silver GAB, "Franks Type 2" (page 212) will always be found with a wrap arround hinge. So the use of these hinges most likely was necessary for some reason.

Greg the difference between BM and NS is that you could drill a hole trough a NS badge without ever noticing a change in color, unlike bunt (colored) metals where you immediately would encounter yellow base metal.

Nice hollow IAB which you got. Don't you think it is rare to find hollow L/51 IAB? Will you contribute some IAB pictures for Frank's IAB book?
