    Help with Badge Terminology

    Hello All,

I don’t collect a lot of badges but do like to pick one up now and then. I know this area can be somewhat of a minefield, and I like to research as much as possible prior to buying a badge. My problem is, when I look at threads and photos pointing out the finer points and minor detail of a badge, I get real confused on the whole “right/left” thing. Is there standard terminology when viewing a badge? When looking at the front of a badge, is it the wearer’s “right” or viewer’s “right”. Often the helpful members will point out detailed information (what makes a badge a known fake or original) by referring to a portion of the eagle’s “left wing” or “right foot”. So…, is it the right foot of the eagle (wearer’s right), or is it the eagle’s right foot (as viewed), or the other way around? I do not mean to make this more complicated than it is, I was just wondering if there was a “standard” terminology or any type of continuity when discussing badges.

    Thanks,

    Lee

    Hi Lee,

Personally, when I make that sort of detailed description, I'm referring to how the image is viewed, not how the item would have been worn. Most reference's I see are also with reference to the viewer.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

If you PM/contact me without the courtesy of using your first name, please don't be offended if I politely ignore you!

        Hi Mike,

I think my problem is more that I don't know what I am looking at. I may look at the "left talon", and not knowing what I am looking for, convince myself that they must mean the other talon. Thanks for the information. It makes sense to me.

        Regards,
        Lee

          Hello Robert,

That is an outstanding aid. I hope you don't mind, but I saved it to my computer. Thanks,

            Hi Lee,
I don't mind at all. I got this excellent cheat sheet from one of our forum members. However i don't remember who created this originally. Whoever it is, let me say thanks!

              Hi Lee,

Mike already explained it to you. One last comment, we often refer to the obverse of the badge, or 'as viewed from the front'. And the reverse, as obviously 'viewed from the rear'.

You'll catch on quicker than you think!

              Regards,
              Mark
