The best you will be able to do is compare it with other stamped items, trying to see if the same techniques, materials, etc... are used. Look at the breast eagles and cap badges for example. They are stamped (some aluminium) and you can see the reverse detail in them.

      Hi Mike,

I agree with "master of the obvious", details are quite lacking. If it weren't for the stamping, it would look like a very poor casting. Details on the acorns especially. Also, eagle looks pretty asymmetrical.

In my opinion, stamped badges as well as aluminum badges were the earliest production runs, generally speaking. This badge is stamped AND possibly aluminum, which would point to early war production. Extremely poor details on this is not consistant with this train of thought and not consistant with early, good quality badges. I would say .

        Dear Mike,

I have nothing to really compare it too, but I have a bad feeling looking at these pics. Lack of detail, color, broad rim of reverse, catch, it all doesn`t sit right with me.
        Cheers, Frank

          Hi Mike,

Well I'm a little late here but I will go with what has been written untill now. This badge doesn't give me a warm feeling at all. I like to keep an open mind towards all unique badges but even if I never saw another example I have to be able to recognize features I know from original badges.

When looking at this badge I don't see anything that I'm familiar with when it comes to hollow period badge construction. Amongst a lot of other things what definitively closes the door for me is the fat rounded rim when looked upon from the reverse.
