The case of fading KVK1

Hello all,
About a year ago I purchased a KVK1 screwback with swords and case. The badge was in fine condition, however over the last year the silver "plating" has began to fade, leaving a dark finish. This piece has been declared authentic by members of this site and several other folks in the collecting community. The badge has been handled very little and it is stored in an airtight tupperware type container, so what gives? Why is it fading? Improper storage? Or worse yet is it a fake? Any ideas will be well appreciated.

The fact it is fading is in fact a big indicator that it is original.Unfortunately original zinc items will absorb the top finish leaving the gray you described.Its to do with the reaction between the base metal and the finish.There is no real way to stop it.I have a frank and reif zinc tank badge that has over the last year accelerated in its loss of top coat.

Unfortunately its very common with late war pieces.

I do not suggest storing you medals in a tupperware container, while I do agree with reif40, this is most likely a reaction to the base medals. Their is other things besides moisture that can excellerate this process. I never handle my pieces with my bare hands, I wear cotton gloves, the ph level in of your body contains acids. Also gases can also be harmful as well in the excelleration of the oxidation process.

I keep my pieces stored in a dry climate in rikor cases, with a special moisture , chemical and gas inhibitor pellots that come in a plastic tube with vents. I purchased it from a company called Lite Impressions. They specialize in archival safe storage products. It cost $25.00, I keep my medals in a 4Ft. safe and the piece I have dose a much larger area.

While nothing can eliminate the aging process all togeather it will help control the harmful effects caused by time. Just somt thoughts.
