Marc is touching here very interesting problem here. We have to remember one thing. Scanners were design to scan documents and pictures not the war badges. Scanners are using very aggressive light which is reflected at many different angles by badges irregular shapes and finish. In some situations this phenomena creates distortion and unreal images. I guess it is a good material to start the separate thread about it. Anyhow, to illustrate my point please check two pictures posted by me below.
