Close Combat Clasp and case for review

    Hello all,

I picked this up today along some other guaranteed original german breast eagles and other insignia. The case itself showed evidence of wear, water stains?, and other things that made me think it was period. The Close Combat Clasp itself looked sharp in detail, had a '900' mark present indicating silver content, as well as patina that helped me towards buying it. It also features details that I research to be commonly found on presentation models such as the center hook.

I am wary of medals, but hopefully I did well this time. If it is original, what maker would this have been? Thanks in advance for your time.

    Sam

      Hi Sam,

Sorry to say, but this one is a cast fake for me as well, and made to deceive as a "Presentation CCC in Gold". It is cast from an original Hobacher CCC, but the details are weaker compared to an original, here is one to compare (courtesy of Giel's excellent collection). In particular to notice the weaker detail of the acorn caps and oakleaf veining on your example compared to this original. The raised flaws on the obverse of yours are also indicative of a poor casting job while making the mold that yours came from. Moving to the reverse, a rivet on the backplate and a tophook were added to make it look like a Presentation CCC, but original Presentation CCCs are much higher quality than yours. Also original presentation clasps were made by Juncker and used a completely different obverse and reverse design than the Hobacher design we see on your clasp. The 900 mark on your pin was also added to deceive, and add some legitamacy to the clasp, but no original CCCs were made from real silver. Even original Presentation CCCs in Gold weren't made from silver, they were made from brass/tombak.

The case is fake as well.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

        Tom,

Thank you so much for your detailed response. I figured there was a high chance it wasn't good.

Well the antiquing gods have been quite kind to me, I was able to get a full refund for the clasp and the owner was quite understanding. It helps I was a regular there. Thanks again for the confirmation.

Good news Sam. Good on the seller for taking it back and good for you to have some money back to buy a real one next time.

The hook mount is wrong as well . The one on yours has been soldered onto a base whereas the originals were set into a shallow depression and crimped over . Worth keeping as long as you didn't pay too much for it as an example until you drop on an original . Sorry but good luck
