    zinc badge wash

What happens to the the wash? on zinc badges. i don't understand why so many badges lose their coloring. What happens? I can understand rub wear but a lot of the badges I see are completely grey. How can you tell if a CCC is gold if the coloring has gone away? Is ID made by minute bits?

    Hi Brien,

Basically there are impurities in zink that oxidize and that breaks the bond of the finish to the surface of the badge. Zink is actually a good base metal to use for badges and if it is refined properly there will be no finish loss. However wartime zink refining wasn’t typically good and especially later in the war it got worse so you see more finish loss on later war badges. Earlier in the war zink refinement was decent and firms like JFS and the AGMuK makers had access to very good quality zink so their badges will typically still be found with their finish remaining even 80 years after they were produced.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little
