    Fake GAB on Dealers site

    Hi guys,

While checking out the dealer sites this morning I came across this well made and dangerous Wurster GAB fake. At first glance quite nicely detailed but the bright white finish and rough surface are pretty big red flags. Reverse hardware is pretty close to originals, but off just enough to know something isn't right with this one.

Stay on your toes out there gents, the fakes are getting better every day.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Hi, Tom, it's good that some people still have the perspective, otherwise we're lost ...... Greetings Butcher

It sometimes worry me. What within a few decades when these very clever made fakes have developed patina and look old? Real experts on very specific and narrow area's will still be save but for the rest of us...

Hi Tom, I would have thought badge was ok at first glance. Doing a litle research, I noticed I have no pictures of a match. My fake data base has very few IAB's in it. The fakes are mostly stamped examples. I guess someone figured this out and decided good time to make a real good copy. Your research I am sure will save many collectors.

Scary yes but fakers fortunately are always one step behind and despite their best efforts they will always get caught by the experts such as Tom

Thanks for the heads up Tom.
A well made fake for sure.
The biggest giveaway is the very faint obverse detail and the wrong basemetal.
The reverse is a really good imitation. Cleverly copying the position marks for soldering the hinge.
Hardware, leaving the catch aside look very good.
I'm quite sure this is a Staegmeir reproduction.

Very good fake that even shows the sloppy solder near the catch(which slightly off). Keep up the good work Tom!

                  Best regards

Here is another one identical to it, posted by our member Tenten awhile back. Identical fake to the one that started this thread, very dangerous fake. Fake #2.jpg

If you look at the back of the GAB, it has a yellowish tint to it. thats something I don't like. On all other points a very nice made fake. Dangerous.

Thanks once again Tom for your diligence .A dangerous fake indeed that will catch many collectors out.
I hope the dealer is aware this is a fake.
