Just a guess, but with the latter "W in circle" badge, it rather seems to be a problem of the cutting tool and not the die itself.

        Frank,

On a "die-struck" badge, what is the cutting tool if not the two halves of the die itself?

I guess we need a "primer" on actual production techniques. I envision a large hydraulic press that feeds the sheets of metal and "stamps" the two halves of the die together, so that what comes out is close to the final form of the badge (with any design cut-outs present), ready for hand finishing to smooth rough areas, apply hardware, and apply finish. This would not be the same technique as die "injection molding" or casting.

Robert Johnson's dagger books have some detailed descriptions of the Third Reich dagger production process from start to finish, including drop-forging blades. Have you seen anything like this for badge production?

@Robert - can't say "Eeeew!" to this EWE!

        Regards,
        Greg
