    Flatback with (maker) mark ?

    Hi Guys,

    Thought this was kind of interesting.

    Just found this wernstein design flatback PAB on C. Baldes site.

    The badge is marked 14 on the reserve. If this is indeed a maker mark then L. Lauer from Nurnberg could have been the manufacturer of these badges.

    The mark looks authentic to the badge but I guess there is know way to tell if this indeed is a mm. Anyway quite interesting.

    P.S. Too bad the obverse doesn't look like the reverse ..I still need one of these and the price is pretty good.

      Hi Dan,

      As a matter of fact I didn't. I already have both grades of the Flatback PAB in my collection and I'm quite happy with them. Altough a mm mark is a nice thing to find on a badge it won't change it's quality or desirability in any way, at least for me it won't. Judge a badge on its quality and not on the maker mark and you will never go wrong. Sooner or later we're about to find out who made these unmarked badges anyway

        The maker mark looks a bit weak. Is there a chance it was added post war to enhance desirability?

          I saw that last night.. Never quite happy going for a badge with a punched mark that is not a common mark. It would be nicer if it was raised...more chance of being there when the badge was manufactured.

          We saw recently a flak badge from DN with a "1" on it but consensus was that it was not a maker mark.

          just my tuppence worth.

            For sure possible, these big numbers are not what we expect to see when we're looking at mm. Reminds me a bit of the big "4" on the S&L IAB featured in Tuckers book.

            I only posted it because it's interesting to know that this exists but as long as we don't see other flatbacks marked in the same way it just is what it is, a number or a mark but not necessarely a mm.

              The mark could be partially filled by the bronze finish. I would expect that if it was original to the badge. You can try and locate other items by this manufacturer and see if he used a simular styled mark.
