Hi Dan,
my knowledge about these RSS marked PAB's is almost equal to ZERO...but when i'm looking at your badge i don't have a warm feeling about it...Please check my picture, when i used other member RSS PAB picture as an example. Here is what i don't like it:
1) sharp edges
2) if the "original" hinge plate would be left in place then his back-plate will be sticking out when looking from the obverse...

But Dan, don’t loose your hope yet. It is my personal opinion only and if I would be you, I would wait for much more experienced member’s opinions. Good luck!<o =""></o>

Hi Guys,

Dan's RRS is absolutely ok, a little beaten up with a repaired hinge, not sure about the catch, but original.

These RRS's are one of the stranger Wernstein design PAB's. Not only did they use an uncommon zinc mix that gives these badges a smooth feeling, they also never figured out a good methode to attach the hardware and they were the only maker using this design that decided to do something about the plain grass area hence the two grass variants.

Hi Philippe,
please help me out here. How would you explain this "sharp shaped" edges (unless it is bad picture effect)? And how about the original hinge? Based on the marks from the reverse, if the original hinge still would be in place, then you would be able to see piece of it (between right wing and eagle head) from the obverse (again it could bad picture as well).

Hi Robert,

I don't think the badge has sharp edges, what you see is most likely the result of the corroded finish breaking off the wreaths sides.

The hinge indeed is a repair. Normally, as visible on the other bade you posted, the hinges on these RRS's are crimped. What happened hear is that the original crimps where filed away, leaving the dark area above the hinge, before re-attaching the hinge. Could be the original hinge that was re-attached or a replacement hinge.

I saw this in the test forum yesterday and wondered when it would show up here!

It may be a little worn but it does have a decent obverse finish. My experience is that the finish did not hold up well by this maker. It also has the more detailed grass area that I personally like.

I was 99% sure this was a good badge before I bought it after comparing it to others on the Forum. I could tell it had a replaced hinge but you just don't see many of these for sale and the obverse was in very good condition so I bought it. I definitely prefer this version with the more complex grass pattern as Philippe pointed out..at least this maker tried to improve on the basic " Trabbi" design .

@Philippe...what do you make of the eagle's head? Has it's beak been deformed or are all RRS PAB's like this?

I also meant to mention that this PAB weighs in at a hefty 35.4 grams

which makes it the second heaviest in my collection.\Dan

Hi Dan,

The deformation on the eagles head for sure is the result of external influences, they were worn in combat you know

Unlike most mint PAB's posted here your badge might well have seen actual combat.

The RRS indeed is one of the heavier Wernstein design PAB's and this IMO has everything to do with the uncommon alloy mixed used to produce them. The weight of your badge is spot on for this maker.

Diving in and out of tanks can be rough on a badge. Perhaps it was repaired because the soldier considered it good luck.

I think this is the best obverse finish I've seen on any R.R.S. with the more detailed grass area (the left one in Robert's comparison is one of mine with more detailed grass, and it has zip finish other than on the fittings).
