    Legion Condor Panzerabzeichen

These are notoriously difficult, because no-one really KNOWS what is good or bad.

Different companies could have been, and probablky were, involved in their production, despite the small number of troops entitled to them.

The bones on that one are like those shown on original photos of the badge in wear. (The bones on the 'generally accepted' type are not, funnily enough).

But the '800' stamp would put me off. I'm always VERY wary of any war badges which have silver marks. Still, you can get original 1918-pattern wound badges from the 20's and 30's in '800' silver, so who knows?

      Hi Torsten,

These badges are so difficult that I wouldn't trust myself buying one all by myself. However if this badge is original I will eat it. Never seen anything like it not in terms of general design and certainly not in terms of set-up.

        Phillipe,
While I agree with you I am holding out against all odds that it is good - do you prefer barbeque sauce? And is red or white wine appropriate for a PAB?

          Hello All,

I will post an image of a known good example (from the George Petersen Collection) and the ebay example.

First and foremeost, the Seller specifically says this is a Portuguese Condor Badge. Very few of these were made. And is can be assumed that one, and only one, Portuguese type 'strike' was made. (The majority of Condor Badges were German produced, and awarded.)

My personal scepticism says the ebayer is not for me. As Philippe mentioned, the rear set-up is odd..... never seen anything like that before. And with an .800 mark on the hinge?!!! Bizarre. Additionally, the obverse has some noticable differences, which I have identified. While the cut-outs around the lower bones could be attributed to hand finishing, the small recesses in the tank hulls are different strikes....period.

For my money, I'd go with a textbook example only.

                Torsten,

I WISH I had that badge in hand to have a close look, and answer your question. It was offered to me along WITH the award doc. I didn't want to spend that much money, but now I wish I had.

As to your question again, looking at the image, it's hard to tell whether the forehead has depressions, or whether the tombak showing through the worn silver is giving the impression of depressions........ My guess is 'optical illusion' from the digital era. No dents. I'll keep studying it.

The best thing you can do with this one is to save the pics in your fake files.

Actually, I just noticed that this badge is also covered on page 94 in Michael Tucker's German Combat Badges and looking at the 'original' that he details in his book, then I would make the following comparison: Tucker's tank is almost identical to the ebay tank + the crossed bones on Tucker's don't match either of the two + the bow at the bottom of the wreath does not match either, but is close to the one on the left + the wreath on Tucker's does not look like either badge shown below and so on....

well, I give up now...no idea what is and what is not original.... best to leave these alone I guess....CHeers, Torsten.
