3D scanner - our hobby killer?

<o =""></o> I'm posting this info here because it especially danger for badges collecting hobby...<o =""></o>

From manufacturer web page: "The Desktop 3D scanner features a complete 3D scanning package - scanning unit, motion subsystem, and software - in an integrated format. With the addition of a graphics workstation, the system includes everything you need to make fast, high-quality scans.<o =""></o>

In a few seconds, the Model 15 captures highly detailed 3D models that you can analyze, modify, and physically reproduce using automated milling machines or rapid-prototyping systems.

    Price: $28000.00<o =""></o>

This is not a “casting” game folks anymore... We are talking here about high tech solutions which could be used to make perfect fakes! Any comments?

You would still need the tooling and machines to produce the award. You would still need to know the correct assembly and finish of the award. I know that those 3D scanners are good, but try to capture all those little landmarks on any genuine award. Working with 3D my self, i know that there are no computers today that can handle all the data needed to replicate those details. Just look at the photos and articles posted by Dietrich and tom hansen on the RK and you will see.

    Cheers.

      Peter,
i wasn't thinking about complicated awards. In my opinion the real danger does exist for: PAB's, GAB's and IAB's only (for now). And Peter, trust me they are very advanced CNC machines on the market today, capable of handling the manufacturing process with cooperation with 3d scanner.
