    2 Schickle Tombak IABs

    Hi guys,
I have these 2 Schickle badges with the earlier setup in my collection. I think both are good, however they greatly differ in weight. First one is only 8.6g, the second one is 15.6g, sheet metal is way thinner on the first one. What do you think?
    Thanks
    Dirk

I’ll have to weigh my ones, that certainly is very light and nearly half the weight of your other Schickle and it’s the same variant. Very interesting.

      Hi Dirk,

Very interesting, I will weigh my examples tonight and post the results too. The thickness in the planchet you mention is certainly a factor. I would also say the chemical composition of the alloy is also a factor. They both look to be nickel silver but depending on how much nickel they added to the mixture of brass and zink could theoretically make it heavier.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Tom, both are tombak, you can see the reddish base metal on the more exposed parts:

Indeed, thanks for the closeup. So that takes nickel out of the picture, so it must just be the thickness of the planchets that make the difference, can you get a shot of the profile of both badges next to eachother to compare?

I have another one I thought to be nickelsilver - the patina is very similar to the Juncker nickelsilver variants, but even this one is just tombak, I had the metal tested, no traces of nickel. This one weighs 13.5g:
