Worn GAB 25 ASA 25 General Assault Badge 25 Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen 25

    Hi Guys,

Picked this one also up at the SOS. IMO nice clearly worn original GAB25. Took quite a few pics as I found the obverse hard to photograph - with the camera autofocussing on specific parts, leaving some features somewhat out of focus. Comments most welcome.

    Cheers, Tom

      Hello.
Badge appears to be original, ground dug example.
      Regards,

Not ground dug, just worn and oxidated. if grounddug, 1/4th would be missing mostlikely due to zink deteriation

IMO condition badge is in to good condition for a ground dug badge. Very nice pick up, never to SOS. Are the vendors negotiable on their prices? I heard mainly for vendors the show.

Thanks everyone for posting. Just to avoid any unclarity on this badge: this is not a ground dug badge. It is just worn and that is one of the reasons I picked it up at the show. I try to collect items that "have been there". I am not a medal/badge collector that looks for minty items that seem to attract the attention of a lot/perhaps most of those collecting medals/badges.

I want to make my opinion a little clearer from an earlier post. I believe that this badge is not ground dug. I feel that the condition of badge would show a lot more discoloration and zinc pest if from the ground. I like this badge, not a fan of mint pieces, I prefer the wore been there condition.

                  Hi John,

Thanks for the additional post. To come back to your earlier questions: The SOS was great! It is better than any other military show I have been to in the last 25 years. Prices were okay but all over the place with some clearly too expensive, most reasonable/what you would expect and some very good deals. Price negotiations were possible most everywhere and resulted in some good discounts here and there. If you have the possibility to attend, just do it. It is one of the highlights of my year every time I go.

                  Cheers, Tom

Certainly not a ground dug piece. But about the "has been there" look versus collecting mint stuff I want to say the following:

Especially with these zinc based badges it is impossible to proof or assume that the so called "has been there" look is caused by the battlefield circumstances. It could be just an unissued badge that has been stored in a very bad environment the last decades (cellar/ attic)

As a mint collector I know a least that my badge was 1. unissued and 2. has the precise look like the day it was 70 years ago bestowed to the brave soldier.

With the "has been there" look it is always questionable unless you have a copper based or cupal badge with a clear wear pattern to the silvering.

                    Regards, Wim

                      Hi Wim,

Thanks for you comments. Much appreciated. In general I agree with your comment however this specific badge shows various signs of wear which are not due to bad storage. Having collected worn items for many years I am happy with what is in my hands on assessment a worn badge. Of course I did not wear it myself in 1943-45 so one is never 100% sure but I am willing to go 90% percent on it.

                      Cheers, Tom

in my opinion this is too broad a statement. Although damage from being buried in the ground does occur to this degree we can see that in some cases the damage can be greater, or even less than 1/4th.

The extent of the deterioration of a badge, or other artifact, is determined by the type and composition of the soil it has been buried in.

Nice worn badge Tom! I like them too in that condition. Equal wear and patina.
