    Medal bar reverse. Opinion needed

    Hi,

I would like an opinion on this medal bar. I never seen this kind of backing material used. Anyone else? Sorry for the bad picture it is all there is.

    Regards,

    Willem

        Hello Willem,

this is a tough one. I don´t have a problem with the backing material, they used, what they had for backings sometimes. What i find a bit strange, is the mounting style, altough it looks really well made and could very well be absolutely ok. I guess, you have to wait for others to comment, as i am really clueless with this one. Sorry, if i am not a big help.

        best,
        Gerd

I have NO problem with this ribbed material backing for ribbon bars usually but also on medal bars-- it was quite common, especially in southern Germany for some reason. (Third Reich collectors really need to spend more time in the IMPERIAL forum checking out our stuff, which frequently has TR awards on bars! )

The reason this may look "funny" and "stretched tall" on the front is... it appears to be a backing for TWO medals, and THREE have been squeezed in, so they look narrower than usual for the height.

I would say this is a typical "summer 1940 war's over" bar.

Although the flat, rather than rounded bow bottom, ribbons style is the choice of the current wave of fraudulent parts bars out there, this one looks fine to me. The metal backing is original and not the hand-made junk used by fakers, and this is a NORMAL combination of awards. It is exactly what a young career officer or middle level NCO would have worn on his "France is defeated" version of dress back on home leave.

                Rick,

Thank you for your reply. The DA indeed looks a little squeezed in between. So you gave a plausible explanation for this narrow bar. I will have a look at the imperial section more often.

I think that's a sharp looking bar! Nice EK as well.

Once again I think Ricks called it.

3 awards crammed on a 2 award backing, giving it that wierd elongated look.

Nice bar & the backing is very common as already piointed out by the others.
                    Regards,
                    Chris

I've got it in today. Please have a another look specially at the EK. The core is non magnetic and appears to be zinc. The frame is quite poor. It is a 3 piece construction. Please give opinions.

                          The EK

No MM (visible). Note the flaw in the right corner of the lower arm.

It appears to be a die flaw. I see nothing wrong with the EK or the rest of the bar.

                              Thanks Chet,

The EK indeed has a positive appearance. Does anyone like to take a shot on the maker?
