I don't want to mis-speak, but normally the sunburst medal itself ... has a "scooped out" or recessed reverse. I'd like to hear the opinions of others, as well.

Type 1 has a flat back in my opinion.

I concur with the others, I have seen and owned in the past both types with flat and dished backs.
