    Wehrmacht Long-Service Medal Bar

    Hi Guys,

Only a two-placer, but I found this one at the Perrysburg Show yesterday. Although it is by no means my favorite style of medal bar, I do like it because of the condition. Both long-service medals are iron while the eagle devices are both non-magnetic. All the mounting hardware (to include the pin, hinge, catch, hanging hooks, and backplate) has the appearance of brass, although everything is actually iron with a gilt finish. Be careful of any medal bars that have backplates made of brass (especially when it comes to wartime medal bars of the Third Reich Period). Backplates of the Third Reich Period were made from zinc or iron. Brass was needed for vital, wartime production, not for assembling medal bars.

    Best regards,
    Tom

    Tom,
That is a superbly conditioned bar.

    Zinc stinks!

Tom - agreed, not my favorite type of bar either, but I must say that this is a nice one. I really like it! This is one of those bars that just speaks to you in a way, doesn’t it. You just look at it and everything feels right.

As always, great taste. Thanks for sharing this one.

        Nice pair Tom!

I prefer traditional drapery mount to "jingling johnnies" too but I couldnt resist one of these either when I had the opportunity. I suspect these were pre-made "en masse" for retail as you see them in manufacturers catalogues offered for sale that way. Mine has the same identical medals & eagles as yours with the same style ribbon mount but on a silver coloured back plate without the backing cloth.

Interesting statement about the backing plate colour as well. I have a NSDAP 15/10 pair mounted in a similar way as these but on a brass colour back plate like yours so I always figured it was brass but I'll check it out closer when I take it out
of mothballs. Thanks for the tip!

        Best regards

        JC

I always have a magnet in my pocket whenever I am at a show.

            Hi JC,

Yes! The traditional mounts look much nicer.

            Best regards,

Both very nice simple bars with a pleasing patina.

Nicely mounted and agree better than the "jingling johnny" mounted style.
