      Hi Tom,

Mmmm, 8 place, all IIIrd Reich I'm sure they DO exist but that alone rings the alarm bells for me.

I have three 6 place IIIrd Reich bars, 2 of those have a couple of foreign ribbons and three 5 place IIIrd Reich bars, also 2 of those have two foreign ribbons.

      Cheers, Ian.

        Ian,

I have some longer bars of 8 - 10 decorations which are all WWII era, but those are rare. For the most part, they wouldn’t exist without foreign awards. I’m sure there are some higher functionary exceptions, to your point.

Otherwise longer bars nearly always are combo bars between both wars.

        J-

Why is that? The actual design or the fact that there are swords attached?

          cheers

The swords. There is no such thing as a long service award with swords.

                I don't have that catalogue.

I know that such combined devices were used on lapel bows that represented the ribbons for several decorations whose devices were rolled into one like this and placed on top, but it shouldn't appear on a ribbon bar, where the individual ribbons appear side by side with the devices attached to the respective ribbon.

Thanks for the clarification. Your previous response "There is no such thing as a long service award with swords" did not account for this scenario, hence my question.

As a sidenote, Angolia suggested the following in his book "For Führer ....." 1978:
/It is possible that a ribbon device was also created for active police members who served in combat in a police formation. The device was a police emblem in silver surmounting two crossed golds swords/.

There is no reference to this suggestion and Angolia is known to be incorrect before, so it it what it is. Either way, the device shown here is not correct in design, as it is all in gold. The police device should also be positioned much lower on the swords.

                  cheers
                  Peter

Hi Peter, yes, 1978 is a very long time ago and those books and others of the period often look woefully out-dated these days.

Yep, no doubt about it … those win hands down (they must have forgotten the Blood Order and the Memelland )
