Police Long Service, E-Stand, Opinions Please!

Opinions please on this item on the e-stand. The medal has unusual material for the backing. Also, please look at the detail of the eagle's wing. Thank you!

The medal itself is fine .. identical to my Rettenmaier marked piece. The ribbon looks to be original too.

I don't see any problem with the medal and I think the buckram backing while different is period IMHO. Be good to hear what others think.

There seems to be more of these single parade mounts lately where the medal/ribbon is genuine, but the backing is questionable (or doesn't even exist.)

I saw one a while back on a dealer site that had no backing, but instead a modern post it note folded with threads holding it together.

Thoughts on where to draw the line on these where the medal/ribbon is fine, but it's called a "single mount", no matter how messy the back is?

Not applying this to the one show, just thinking out loud...

The backing is unusual but could quite easily be period ,tailors shops used what fabric stock was available especially during the war years.

              Hi TooDeep

No problem with the cross itself, the ribbon also looks good (but incorrect) & the backing is unusual; I've seen tons of colours & cloth types but not that buckram type yet but that doesnt mean much because they used what they could get !

The only thing that bothers me on that one is the lack of embroidered ribbon. The 8 year medal ribbon is plain but, to the best of my knowledge wether it be the earlier 35mm ribbon with the "appliqué"/patch style or the later 50mm ribbon both the 18 & 25 year crosses had the same type of embroidered eagle and since original ribbon is probably worth almost as much as the medal. Given original embroidered ribbons without the medals hardly ever show up I would wait for the set. The Customs cross has the same style of special ribbon with embroidery

Attached are picts of the 25y cross mounted on the later 50mm ribbon at left and the 25 & 18 y crosses unmounted with their 35mm ribbons showing the embroidered eagles.

              Salut

              JC

                Hi James

                I agree, you do see a lot of these singles without backing plates etc. IMO, a lot of them are period and they fall in the following categories;

                1) Original mounts that were period removed from bars for whatever reason like the removal of vanity medals after the intro of the Hindenburg Cross in 1935, the removal of the italy medal after Italy gave up, the replacement by "jazzier versions" (Schlesischer Adler in iron replaced by fancier brass or enamel version) or other changes that caused the owner to redo his bar and didnt necessarily re use the previous components

                2) Perfectly correct period bars that were bushwacked post war by collectors or dealers to get at "something special" on that bar, either to restore another bar or make more money by splitting them up resulting a lot of the abandoned crippled puppies we see today.

Thank you for everyone that gave a opinion on this medal. I have decided to pass on this medal. I think it would be better to wait for the medal with the embroidery like J-C suggested.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on this medal J-C! Is there any books you suggest I should pick up that would help me in my endeavors of collecting single mounts?

As always, I hold your opinions in high regards.

There are probably others but I know Tom Yanacek wrote a book on medal bars in general which probably covers singles and is most likely very well done (judging from his knowlegeable input here on the forum) but at my age (2 steps away from the old geezers home and with 1000's of books already to deal with!) I dont buy books anymore

But, unlike the medals, badges and insignia themselves, produced from dies which you can compare to, mounts were hand made all over the place using different techniques from top end tailors & medal shops to smaller commercial and private concerns (mom, sis, wifey & aunt Gertrude up the street) and every one of them is a "leap of fate" IMO but I find they look so much better than the "loose ribbon through the medal ring" variety (which I also have) so I'm not overly concerned about when they were made as long as the components are OK

                    Cheers

                    JC

Same. Started collecting these for that very reason; addicted to single mounts these days.

Very nice set of single mount Hindenburg crosses James. The NOK single the hardest to find of the set, particularly in that condition

                          Thanks JC!

Thinking about starting a thread for these to see what rarities are out there.
