A combination you don't often see...

    Hi Guys,

Here's a medal combination you don't often see. These were awarded to Sgt. Major Richard Just who joined the army in 1905 and was serving on the Eastern Front in 1942!

During 1914-18 he served in the infantry being awarded the EK2 in April 1917 and was wounded in June 1917. From March 1941 to September 1942 he served in the Military Field Railway Service Unit No. 5 and saw service on the Russian Front. In September 1942 he transferred to the General Company Infantry Reserve Battalion 1/133, but was released into the Landwehr a week later. His Wehrpass shows he was wounded on the Russian Front on 14 September 1942, but any WW2 Wound Badge if issued is missing from the group. Clearly a believer in the cause he was also a Party member.

    Hi,
Very nice grouping and attractive way of displaying it! Is the picture from his wehrpass a scan or is it the actual page?
    Thanks for sharing,

Thanks for the comment Mats - Thankfully the picture is a scan, the wehrpass is intact.

That is interesting. He was definitely an old war horse.

Is the bar remounted? The EK2 ribbon has a straight edge which would make it modern....

Hi Patrick, I noticed this and wondered about it. I think the East Medal ribbon is genuine, but the other two as you say look modern. The medal bar is tightly attached to the cardboard mount, but from the part of the reverse I can see it has been repaired. It looks like at least two of the hooks on the metal backplate have broken off and the medals have been reattached using wire and masking tape is used to secure the ribbons to the metal former. My guess is that originally the bar was distressed and has been repaired with replacement of at least two of the ribbons. Of course, that opens up the possibility that the medal bar has been reconstructed post-war from unrelated medals to match the awards in his wehrpass. All the best, Guy

Wondered that as well; looks like the ribbons are draped over a wire for the display?

Hi James, Yes, the group is attached to the board with wire with has been fed through the top of the ribbons.
