Not sure if real or fake

My girlfriend went to italy (florence) and stayed at a very old hotel (she can't remember the name). When there she saw a pulled up carpet, looked and found this underneath. We're not sure if its real or not, but seeing as it came from an old hotel we suspect that it might. I have not had any luck finding info online about it or finding the exact one. Any help in identifying this piece would be very much appreciated.

It seems that an u-boot crew member more than 90 years old decided that hotel was a good place to wear this badge on his civilian clothing...rare but not impossible...but would have been much more interesting to see him around Firenze wearing his Kriegsmarine uniform
So, I will be very angry if, in my next trip to Slovenia with my family, I wouldn't find a Knight Cross in the swimming pool
Really, it's a submarine badge to wear on civilian clothings
