Hi guys,
I bought this five-placer yesterday at the OVMS Show. Since the Braunschweig Ernst August Cross could be awarded to both enlisted men and commissioned officers, the only way we know this bar belonged to a commissioned officer is by the presence of the Austrian Military Merit Cross 3. Class. I would suspect that this bar was assembled in early 1938, soon after the Faithful Service Decoration was instituted. By 1939, the precedence of the Austrian Military Merit Cross would have been elevated and placed after the Ernst August Cross and before the Hindenburg Cross.
Best regards,
Tom
