    Hi JC,

Sorry for trying to be funny. Tony is right, though. "Gong" is just a silly name for a round medal as it reminds some people of a shiny, percussion gong. The medal bar shown below consists of two crosses and four gongs. And at the bottom is a real percussion gong. I suppose it is also a bit of a derogatory term for a round medal since they are typically not as pretty as the crosses.

    Best regards,
    Tom

          Gong

Old Commonwealth militay slang predates the WWII that referres to a campain medal and not a decoration.

More to do with the sound they make when one is on parade and the medals are not court mounted rater than thier shape. (sadly not a sound one is going to hear anymore on Nov 11th as our WWII vets have mostly faided away)

The derogatory aspect comes in two ways. The CVSM and the Defence Medal where often refered to as gongs as all one had to do was show up to get them and thus not much respected by other soilders.

For the US types the famous Purple Heart cartoon of Willie and Joe sums it up.

Before the war a Gong was sometimes also used to refer to a old campainer who's war stoiries somtimes did not jibe with reality.

For Tom's image the first two woult not be gongs (they are decorations), The Hindy cross in the case would not be a gong as it was really earned while the last three would be gongs as the Kampfer could mail in to get them

                  Hi Gary,

That is because I wasn't there. It's the first MAX Show I missed in a long time. I had a lot of things go wrong at home so I decided not to go. I could have still gone, but I needed to prove something to myself: I control the hobby- the hobby doesn't control me.

                  Best regards,
                  Tom
