    Ostvolk 1st class by Rudolf Wächtler & Lange

    Hello all!
    I'm sharing my newest item that I've picked up today, a 1st class Ostvolk medal with swords. I've been eyeballing this guy for some time and I snatched it up today in excitement. It has what appears to be the original case and it is marked "100" beneath the pin. I'll let the pictures do the talking from here...
    Just for more accurate info, can someone state how many of these were awarded? I am struggling to find an amount with a source to back it up.

          Hello,

          Looks like a nice original W&L Ostvolk and case, although I suspect that it has been refinished on the front. It would be very unusual to find a completely intact finish on the front when the reverse is totally grayed out. In my experience I find that the finish on the front and back of these should be consistent. So if the back is grayed out then the front should be as well. The only thing that holds its finish well on these is the hinge, pin, catch, and catchplate. And that is because the hardware is made of better quality base metal and thus retains its finish.

            Interesting, i just assumed that the award had its finish applied to one side only. I have found one ostvolks award with a similar finish on the war relics forum here:

            Of course with this example i have, there really isn't any gold finish showing on the backside with the exception of a small dot in the curved-in area on the reverse under the pin. I am curious as to how one would refinish this award as it appears to have "rubbed off" on the white case lining just like an original finish on other cased examples i have observed. Is it possible one could replicate the finish that war time examples had?
