The Hungarians awarded a medal that looked similar and had the same significance as the German War Merit Cross.
This medal was referred to as the Horthy Fire Cross and was instituted on November 24, 1941.
It was awarded to those who defended the Homeland, and no special merit was required.
It was awarded to both combatants, and non-combatants.
The non-combatant medal lacked the swords and the laurel wreath surrounding the center which read...."AHAZAERT" which is "For Fatherland" in English.
The front-line non-combatants medal lacked the swords, but had the laurel wreath.
The front-line combatants medal had both the swords and the laurel wreath. and had either 1942 or 1943 on the lower arm of the cross on the front of the medal.
All three had the date 1941 on the reverse.
The combatants medals had either 1942 or 1943 on the lower arm of the cross on the front of the medal.
Here is a front-line non-combatants medal with the 1942 date on the front.
Sadly lacking the ribbon.....
