It's an original based on the conjoined star bursts between 11 and 1 o'clock and the die fault to the left of the hinge block as we look ... visible on the reverse of mine ..



I wasn't aware that S&L made these wartime ? The pin is certainly not the typical postwar S&L type.

Thanks Ian, I didn't spot the die fault but now you've pointed it out it's so clear.. Ian this is first class in gold with swords? Is this type attributed to a maker ?

It appears to be a gold/1st class with a significant amount of finish. Most of these had poor finishes and what you find today are "gray" badges whose finish has been absorbed.

S&L stands for Steinhaur & Luck.
