I agree that mine is neither. And neither is the one sold by Detlev as original (your scan again, George):

But, reading through the old threads, I find no real argument why there should be only these two types. I'm not saying Detlev can't be wrong. And I could send mine back, but, having it in hand, I have to say that in EVERY respect it looks, feels - and I'm inclined to say smells - original. Look at the perfect HK, for example.

Hi Web for a long time these two were accepted as the only design for the memel, some believed only one (the laid back G) however over the coming years more of the so called variations have begun to appear. Given theses were awarded for the retieval of German land early on in the conflict the production run you would assumm ( this is my opinion only) would have been short lived as everyone who qualified for this award civil and combat would have recieved it in the early stages. Unlike other awards this production would not have acuired the capacity of numerous factories unlike that of other awards. Like i have said this is only my belief and if you are happy with the medal then that is all that matters. But as years have progressed these variations are becoming more and more away from the early accepted originals. All the best.

          .

31,322 were awarded, by far the rarest of the 'Flower War' medals.

          Cheers,
          David.
At Rathau on the Aller, the CO of 5th Royal Tanks advanced on foot to take a cautious look into the town before his tanks moved in. He encountered one of his own officers, a huge Welshman named John Gwilliam who later captained his country's rugby team, 'carrying a small German soldier by the scruff of his neck, not unlike a cat with a mouse.' The Colonel said: 'Why not shoot him?' Gwilliam replied in his mighty Welsh voice: 'Oh no, sir. Much too small.'

I don't want to go into the details of the Memel medal over and over again, but I don't want to let this thread die quietly either. So just for the record: I have noted your arguments, but have decided to KEEP this medal, because
            1) it is very well made with good detail, 2) it shows consistent wear, 3) Detlev has sold this version as original, and 4) it does not match the types of fakes discussed in the old threads (which I agree are fakes).
So my BELIEF is that there must have been more original variations than the two types shown above.
As I said, just for the record.

            Regards
            Chris
