Ribbon Bar of Admiral Karlgeorg Schuster

    Hi there,

Not my collecting focus, but picked this up among a larger grouping of ribbon bars. I posted this in the KM uniforms forum, thinking they'd appreciate seeing it. It seemed to be of interest to only three collectors! Oh well...this is the proper forum for this, I suppose.

    Enjoy!

Very nice, especially attributed like that.

P.S. There don't seem to be as many people interested in ribbon bars ? Personally I love them ... I'm appreciating them more and more as I'm reaching my financial ceiling with the ribbon awards and looking for the bars to compliment them.

Definitely my favourite area of collecting. There are a few people I know who specialise in ribbon bars but agree they do seem to be under valued. I like the way you can get an idea of the service career and age of the recipient. They can be fairly cheap too although I can imagine this attributed bar would have cost a few quid.

          Hi Jason,

Spectacular Kriegsmarine ribbon bar. A keeper for sure and as you are well aware, a two-row German ribbon bar is a real rarity. I remember seeing that beauty before.

          Thank you,
          Tom

              Dear Jason,

One of the most impressive ribbon bars I have seen in a long time.

              Best regards
              Pierce

Thanks, everyone, and I'm happy to see that you enjoyed seeing this one. I agree, Pierce, it is quite a rarity...these double row bars of the period are significantly harder to come by.

                Best,

Can you identify what each ribbon represents?

                  Thanks.

                      Jason,

That is one of the best ribbon bars I have ever seen!

I love the ones with foreign awards; to have one with 2 rows is almost unheard of! You have been holding out on me!

                        Jason,
The rest of the KM section community was speechless so they could not comment

And now I know what kind of awards it has on it.
I am not at all into ribbon bars, so just a question:
How many were usually mounted in a row? Always same or varying ? I can remember seeing a KM reefer with a 13 cm long distance between loops for one bar.

                        Regards
                        Christian

Got one question as well, what do the yellow stripes on some of the ribbons on the lower row represent?

                          cheers

                              Dear Christian,

That is nice of you to say. Honestly, I had primarily wanted to share this with you and Eduardo, but I had figured other KM collectors would appreciate seeing it, too.

To answer your question, most bars of the period were mounted in a single row. For example, I've seen more bars of similar decoration count mounted in a single row than a double row. So the latter is rare. Even though 16 decorations on one row would seem unwieldy to wear! It makes more practical sense to have no more than 10 decorations in a row, I think.

That said, the award loops on a uniform are often deceptive. There are many factors to consider, but loops were often meant to accommodate both a feldspange and Ordenspange. Also, while the standard decoration width is 1,5 cm, bars were also made with larger styles and different folds. I have ribbon bars of 4 decorations that are just as long as the standard bars of 7 or 8 decorations.

So it can be difficult to establish the length of the actual bar worn in an unnamed and unresearched uniform.

                              Best,

                              Jason
