    Ost Volk Medal

I've taken a look at the reference threads, but would appreciate some clarification!

This appears to be a 2nd class with the wrong ribbon or just some kind of crazy fake?

    Thanks!

    Hi Scotty,

It looks to me like an original second class in bronze without swords, in which case the all-green ribbon would be correct. There were second classes in bronze, silver, and gold (with and without swords) as well as first classes in silver and gold (with and without swords). The second classes had ribbons and the first classes were pinbacks. The second class in bronze had an all-green ribbon as already mentioned. The second class in silver had a medium green ribbon with two white stripes. The second class in gold had a light green ribbon with two red stripes. As these were made from zinc, it can be hard to tell whether the piece is bronze, silver, or gold as the finishes fade away over time and give an overall gray colored appearance. You can usually tell, though, by looking at the suspension ring of the medal. The suspension rings are made of better-quality base metal and therefore they retain their original finish. It looks to me like the suspension ring is bronze on your medal so I believe you have a second class in bronze with a proper, all-green ribbon.

Is there a maker marking on the ring? In many cases the rings will be marked '100' to Rudolf Wächtler & Lange of Mittweida/Saxony.

    Best regards,
    Tom

Agreed, a typical 2nd Class in Bronze ... shame the brooch mount is missing.

Ostvolk 2nd Classes, Bronze, Silver and Gold with and without Swords ...

As Tom says note the colour of the suspension rings

and 1st Class (both were originally Gold coloured)

these were awarded in Silver and Gold, with and without Swords.
