    Pin

    Dear All,
This pin is meant to be WWII, I don't know how you can tell? as this is not my bag. Anyway, I liked it, it was cheapish..... any info will be greatly appreciated.

If I have posted this incorrectly pls feel free to move it.

I will try and get a better scan

      Simon,

thats a "Internationales Segelflieger-Leistungsabzeichen in Silver(?)" Huesken values it in his 1999 book issue with 500 D-Mark . I think, thats a bit to high like all the prices in his cataloge.

      Hope, this helps.

      best,
      Gerd

PS: Whats the color? Can you see traces of gold or silver?

Darren Hi, thats what I took it to be....

Gerd Hi, here's a couple of more scans, still trying to get to grips with this new scanner

Another of the front, as you can see the enameled front is in A1 condition

Sorry about the size of the pic's but before I post them they are a lot larger on my PC

Anyways, here is the reverse. I must admit, to me it does look silver, you will notice on the reverse it looks like gold, but my thought process was that the silver had worn away showing the base material? But it certainly isn't rust.

Your thoughts on this will be welcomed

            Hi Simon,
this being an international award, issued both pre and post war i dont think it will be easy to prove that it was awarded to a german. But that price may be due to the scarcity as an international award ?????

              Hey Ash,

Happy New Yr to you, up in your in laws world last week, Burn's night haggis and all!! Almost wore a skirt as well

Anyway back to the back, it would be nice if it were a bob or two, but I got it cheap and thought it quite nice, which is half the battle

                Hi Simon,

i like it and think, its a wartime example. It seems from the photos in the Huesken catalog, that the wreath on the gold one is smaller. It looks like a silver pin IMO, as i can see traces of silver on the reverse.

                best,

                Gerd

Don´t know if you already know it, but that circle mark on the reverse indicates Steinhauer & Lück as the manufacturer.
                    Cheers, Frank

                        Hi Frank,
As you know paper is my thing really, but I just seem to be getting the call to enter the dark side

Thanks for the help and the lesson, I didn't have the fainest idea who the maker was. Did Steinhauer & Lück mark all of their items that way? What other items did they make?

Again please forgive my ignorance, but the dark side is really calling me these days

                          Dear Simon,

No, not very many of their items are marked that way. But there are pre 1945 1st pattern zinc e-boat badges marked that way, as well as Luftwaffe clasps.

However, Steinhauer & Lück continued to mark their items that way after the war when they proceeded to produce for the collector market (with swastika, "under the counter") and without swastika (1957 items).
We know for sure that this is an S&L mark because collectors bought badges directly from S&L in the seventies and the badges had that mark. Before I heard that story from a collector friend of mine who bought such a badge from S&L, it was already suspected it might be S&L. It was good to get some first hand experience confirmation though.

Apart from that, after February 1944, S&L were the only company that held an authorisation from the LDO to produce tools for lapel pin miniatures, licenses of other makers to produce their own tools/designs were cancelled. But that is another story and your badge is certainly earlier. But it kind of shows that S&L were miniature specialists, probably also before 1944.
                          Cheers, Frank

                            Hello Simon,

you are very welcome. I have added a picture of the cataloge, i meant.

Its not bad, gives a good overview, but the prices are out of line. For pins there is actually a better one, from Heering/Huesken, which i highly recommend to you, if you want to have a reference for pins. Its called "Katalog der Abzeichen deutscher Organisationen 1871-1945"

Frank is of course right with the circle mark. I first thought, its some kind of center mark, but i am convinced now, that its the S&L mark. The first wartime one, that i see with this mark. I have had this mark on some minis on a chain, which came all from S & L supposedly. But like Frank already said, they marked them this way very rarely.

                            best,

                            Gerd
