    East Medal with packet

    Hi guys,

I bought this packeted East Medal yesterday at a small military show. I really like it because of the large-size packet, which is seldom encountered with East Medals. The packet is marked to Grossmann & Company of Vienna. I believe the medal is a match to the packet, although I am not certain as there is no maker marking on the ring.

    Best regards,
    Tom

Here is a better look at the medal:

I like the overall, faded appearance of this medal. I still think it has a decent look and even though the silvering to the rim and helmet has faded, it is still there. Nice detail on this one too.

Hi Tom, very nice set, but IMO the medal doesn't look a Grossmann Ost.

Thanks for the comments, Dale and Antonio.

This medal and packet gives me the impression of having been together since the day it was made. Of course I can't prove that and who's to say what exactly happened to this medal and packet over the course of 70+ years. Doing a search, I found only one thread showing a Grossmann '11' marked Ost Medal.

            http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...edal+Grossmann

I wish the pictures were larger, but I see a lot of similarities between the marked Grossmann shown in the linked thread and my unmarked example.

            Best regards,
            Tom

Here are the two pictures of the Grossmann Ost Medal from the thread linked in my previous posting.

If anyone has a Grossmann, '11' marked Ost Medal I would surely like to see some large and clear pictures of the front and reverse for comparison purposes.

              Thank you & best regards,
              Tom

                Tom,
Below is a link to the only one I could find in a quick google search. It looks the same as yours but my old eyes aren't the best at comparing small details.

                  Thanks, Dale.

After doing a side by side comparison I am still unsure. I wish the picture of the front was a bit clearer.

                  Thanks again & best regards,
                  Tom

                      Tom:

Your "Ostmedaille" is definitely not a "Grossmann" piece!

You have a piece by "Otto Zappe" out of Gablonz.
Maker's authorized code is '110' when he uses it.

There are more than a few differences between the
'Grossmann' piece & your 'Otto Zappe' but I'll only
cover a couple of them to save time.

The wording on the reverse of the medal -
"WINTERSCHLACHT" is not the same on the
'Grossmann' piece as found on the 'Otto Zappe' piece.

The date '1941 / 42' is also different on a 'Grossmann'
piece than what is found on the 'Otto Zappe' piece.

Your 'Otto Zappe' medal has a "larger 2" in the date
which is actually larger than the other numerals in
                      that date on that medal.

For the other differences I'll let you research them out
                      - See Sascha Weber's book - "Die Medaille Winterschlacht
                      im Osten 1941/42 (Ostmedaille)'.
