    Packeted Prague Castle Bar

I bought this one off the e-stand a few years back. It's the only one from the Prussian state mint in Berlin that I have ever seen (though I think the seller had another one he kept or sold). I just wanted to see if others had seen many of these around.
    Thank you,
    Dale

      Hi Dale,

Looks like a nice clasp and I like the packet too. My fist thought was that the packet was most likely for an Imperial Prussian medal of some sort, but I don't rightly know. It is reminiscent of packets that I have seen for Imperial medals, but I suppose it could be for a Prague Castle Clasp. I have never seen one exactly like it before. Very interesting packet. Thanks for posting. You might want to post this in the cases & packets forum too. Maybe even in the Imperial forum.

      Best regards,
      Tom

Thanks Tom. I hadn't thought about the clasp not belonging to the packet, but you could very well be right. I'll give it a day or two here and then try there if i don't get more info.

          Dale,

I have one in a bag but I recall the bag is unmarked.

Will look at it later and let you know.

Thanks Gary. If I recall correctly, the seller had two for sale back in 2009 and you might have bought the other one. I've posted the packet in the Imperial section but no response yet; will post it in the packets forum when i get a chance.

I picked up several Prague Castle bars a few years ago that were in their packets.

Here is a scan showing them. Where the second packet is, I don't exactly know.

I have seen these before and also they came in little red boxes wrapped in paper.

                  Dale,

I just checked my packet. It is exactly the same (same markings) as yours and the one showed by Tim. I purchased mine from Mike Heuer (Mike H) when he sold out his collection.

Thanks guys. Good to see that there are more than just mine out there. I tried to research the net to see if the Prussian mint even existed when these bars were produced, but the info I could find (combined with my limited German) was inconclusive. I believe that at some point, it became part of the national system and was renamed Hauptmunzamt Berlin, but I'm not sure if this is true nor am I enough of an internet sleuth to find a definitive answer to this. The number of these bars found in the packets is a good indicator, though one could still argue that the packets were for something else and married up at a later time by a dealer or collector.

Having had an interest in the ,,Spange Prager Burg" for quite some time, I can remember hearing as far back as the late 1980's, that this packet was correct for these bars. Certainly not conclusive by any means, but there it is for whatever it's worth. I remember paying $5 for not much more than a shred of one, now lost. It took a long time to come across a complete example.
I am sure that at least some the Goethe Arts and Science Medals were marked on the rim for the Prussian State Mint (in abbreviation as I remember).
                      Regards,
                      G.

Very nice sets. And good to learn that these red packets are indeed for the Prague Castle Clasp.
