Help needed to identify my grandfathers LW ribbon bar & badge

    Hi all,

I'm really glad I found this forum and wanted to ask you for your help in identifying the badge and ribbon bar on the picture of my grandfather Oberleutnant Wolfgang Fuchs (KIA 31.12.44 with Stab NJG3 near Wandre in Belgium). I tried finding a picture similar to the ribbon bar he wears on the Internet and this forum with no luck at all...

I think one is the KvK 2nd class with swords, but what is the other one?

I'm also not certain about his job with NJG3; I was told he was a pilot but I can't find anything about him on the Internet (on his last flight he was listed as Bordfunker (radio operator) but he was only filling in for someone who fell sick) and the bagde he is wearing doesn't look like a Flugzeugfuehrerabzeichen... Any idea what it could be?
And what kind of Frontflugspange is he wearing?

    Just follow this link
    http://service.gmx.net/mc/294i9FGjpdgkldTJ6apJDpbUY8itkp
and then press the button marked "GMX MediaCenter starten", then click the picture...

    I know, lots of questions...
Thank you all for your help & keep up the great job...

    Hi Michael,

The bar is the bomber bar (heavy/meduim or dive bomber) it came in three classes bronze, silver and gold....I can't tell which it may be.

KVK with swords on the ribbon bar, the other I can't tell.

The ribbon through the chest of the uniform is the Iron Cross 2nd Class.

Thats all I can tell at the moment, I think in the picture he's a Hauptmann isn't he here ?

      Hi Markus

Well, he was Oberleutnant (1st Lt.) and the one ribbon you can't tell is the one I'd like to know...
Any idea what the badge on his left chest pocket could be? Looks like it has some enamel in it but as one can only see a part of it , who knows.

      Thanks anyway...

The badge on his pocket looks like it could be a DRL sports badge.

The second ribbon I think may be a foreign award, though I am unsure which one... First impression was that Bulgarian bravery award, but impossible to tell. I just cant think of any light colored ribbons that are WWII German.

I am surprised there isnt a 4 year Luft service medal there. Any idea when he joined up?

Sorry, I don't really know when he joined up...

I've had some problems with getting ANY information from my family; they're a bit 'tight-lipped' about anything concerning our families past...

But yesterday I got the number of my grandfathers uncle (didn't know he's still alive) and I think I'm going to call him tonight... perhaps I'll be able to tell you a bit more about him later on...

            Cheers,
            Michael

              Welcome!

Gruße Michael! Welcome to the forum. I would agree with Mark's evaluation on both the badge (DRL Sports Badge) and the second ribbon. You can just see faint stripes and swords on the ribbon and i cannot imagine it being anything else.

Hi, and thanks for the welcome...
I thought it looked like the Sportabzeichen but was a bit unsure because if the 'white rectangle with a dark spot in it' ... I haven't seen a Sportabzeichen with these befor. Do you have a picture somewhere?
And which Bulgarian medal might that ribbon represent?

                Thanks a million,
                Michael

I wonder if the second ribbon is a Westwall medal

I would have to guess the ribbon bar is a Spanish campaign medal and the badge is a first pattern wound badge.

The Spanish campaign medal would look darker in b/w. This is definitely the Bulgarian bravery cross, though impossible to tell which grade exactly. The ribbon has been discussed here:
                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=12519

And here you can find a b/w picture of the ribbon in wear:
                      http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ead.php?t=7043

These are WW1 awards, but the ribbon is the same.

                      Regards
                      Chris

                        Hi all...

thanks a million for your input.

I tried calling his brother last night (brother, not uncle, sorry) but only got an answering machine. I really hope to get some more information from him till the weekend and will post anything that might 'decide' the questions I'm having in this thread.

Again, thank you all very much for your help... much appreciated .

                        Cheers,
                        Michael

PS: I also contacted the 'Bundesarchiv - Zentralnachweisstelle' and asked them for any information concerning him; might take a while though till I get any answers from them... I'll keep you posted.
