Grouping with L15 Eastern Front Medal

    Hi Gents,
two days ago I purchased this litte grouping form a family. After I took the home I checked for makers. On the bag from the EF Medal there was ORTH as maker printes, but in the ring there is a L15......
Well, funny thing that this is from a vet who didn`t make it back and medals were sent to the family.....
    Regards
    Sascha

        Hi Sascha,

        Very nice grouping.

You would think that an East Medal produced by Friedrich Orth would be marked either '15' (the chancellery supplier Lieferant number) or 'L/14' ( the LdO code number for commercial production). 'L/15' is the LdO code for Otto Schickle. But perhaps 'L15' (without the slash) is just another marking used by Orth where the 'L' stands for 'Lieferant'. Since this grouping came to you from the family of a KIA recipient (and the medals were mailed home to the family) I wouldn't suspect that this is a mismatched set that was paired together.

In the linked thread, Ron shows a late war Westwall Medal that came in a Friedrich Orth packt. The Westwall Medal is also marked 'L15'.

Another 'L15' marked Westwall Medal is shown in post #9 of the following thread. This medal also came in a Friedrich Orth packet (packet shown in post #5) according to the owner.

The same medal is also shown here:

              Hi Sasha,

Very nice little grouping, and interesting observation about the L numbers. I think Tom Y. solved the riddle for us, looks like something Orth consistently did (nice detective work Tom!).

Would love to see some closeups of that IAB, looks pristine and appears to be a JFS.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                Hi Tom,
yeah I think the mystery is solved
As soon as I am of duty today I can make some close ups of the IAB.
                Regards

L15 marked pieces are from years debated, because considered postwar pieces.
See for example KvK 1 class marked "L15", considered poswar assembled with Orth leftovers.
In this case, the medal posted from Sascha doesn't shows the Orth design we know from "15" marked Ost medals, so, to be honest, it is a very nice medal, but IMO still a questionable one. If I'm not mistaken measurements too are a little smaller than known Orth original pieces.
I think we should shed some more light on the subject.

                    Hi Antonio,
yes there are some good discussions in the german SDA about it.
Also very interesting information from some experts on L15.

But here is the picture Tom asked for ;-)

                      Hi Sascha,

Really nice silver JFS IAB. While bronze JFS IABs can be found in excellent condition quite frequently, it is hard to find a silver JFS in that kind of condition.

                      Best regards,
                      Tom
