Regulation on when to wear ribbon bars

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for some information about the regulation on how/when to wear ribbon bars. I looked on the old posts but didn't find any clear answer (I found this interesting post on how to compose the bar: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...bon+bar&page=2 though).

I have an officer tunic with:
    - EK2 + Ostmedaille ribbons sewn to one of the front buttonhole
    - A ribbon bar with EK2, KvK with swords and Ostmedaille

I would like to know what was the regulation on these.
    - On pictures taken on the field, there is usually no ribbon bars (only sometimes for high ranking officers). In this case they are only the ribbons in the buttonhole.
    - On parade / not on field pictures, there is usually the ribbon bar but sometimes also the ribbons on the button holes
    - I have some pictures showing both but in this case the ribbons sewn to the buttonhole are not on the ribbon bar (see pictures below).

Was is allowed to wear them at the same time ?
Was is allowed to wear ribbons bars on the field ?
Is it realistic to have on the same combat tunic with EK2 and Ostmedaille ribbons on the buttonhole and also loops for the ribbon bar above the left side breast pocket ?

    Thanks for your help !

    Best,

    Max

    Hi Max,

    An interesting question.

From what I have seen in period photos not everyone abided by the regulations. For example there are many photos of officers (and perhaps others) wearing the same ribbon on the buttonhole as on the ribbon bar- be it an EK2 Spange, Eastern Front Medal, etc. This was against regulation, but it happened.

    Kind regards
    Pierce

        Hi Max,
Of course it was possible, many soldiers did not follow the rules!

You'll see period photos (and untouched examples) of all sorts of anomalies. Soldiers broke regulations all the time. The higher the rank, the more they could get away with. Of course, even lower rank and file got away with plenty. Combat expediences took precedence over silly rules at the time.
