Russian Front (Eastern Front medal) help

I am looking for any comments or opinions on this Russian Front medal. It has a maker mark on the ring of "85".

    Thanks for the help,
    Randy

      Hi Randy,
This one looks like a nice example to me. Even better, it's from Julius Pietsch of Gablonz, which is a not so easy maker to find. If you ever decide to part with it, let me know!

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Nice badge, I always look for the small bubbling to the inner gray circle area, this one has a nice patina to it. Although a common badge, it has along with the German cross in cloth always been one of my favorites and I think it is a really nicely executed as far as design goes.

I think the bubbling is not on all medals. I guess when the medal is plated with copper before the actual silvering, this bubbling can appears. This copper plating proces is mentioned in the production steps of the Ost -Medaille. But I think the later examples didn't recieve this copper plating anymore and in that case the center grey fades away without bubbling -effect.

                  Regards, Wim

                    Interesting Wim...

I agree not all Ost medals have "bubbling" but I tought it was the other way around; that the copper coat actually prevented the "bubbling" rather than caused it. I dont have many of those but on my specimens that have a coppery undetone (mainly visible on the helmet) the bond between the finish and the medal surface appears better than on the silvery/white finish that seems to be applied directly to the zink surface.

Attached are picts of a "61" with what looks like the copper undercoat and a "65" with the bright shiny silver and bubbling

                    Regards

                    JC

                        I prefer the bubbled examples.

                        Nice medal.

                        Cheers.

                          Russian Front Award

Thanks guys for the great information. When I took the close up photos of my "85" and looked at the fine details, I sure liked it. I might just get interested in collecting a few different makers of this award!

                          thanks again for the help,
                          Randy
