Sample Board - Any advice please

    Hi Guys,

I picked up this sample board at a UK auction where it was described as 'a board of replica Nazi medals, estimate £15-25'. Looked like a real sleeper but it went for a lot more than that, but I was glad to get it anyway. Unfortunately, it's missing its miniature Mothers Cross. Firstly, I assume these are now worth more left as complete boards, as so many must have been destroyed by having the medals removed (I had another some years ago and in my ignorance cut the medals off). Am I right? Also the West Wall medal, Krim Shield and Narvik Shield are pretty manky (see additional pics). Is there anything I can do to safely clean them up? Or should I leave them as they are? Or, if I do that will they get worse.

Thanks for all advice, views, comments etc.

    All the best, Guy

Perhaps this is not a salesman's board as some of the ribbons are obviously incorrect. Something to investigate and consider.

Werent most of these just post-war made souvenirs for soldiers?

Yes, I should have said Souvenir Board, my understanding is that they were put together by hard-pressed Germans immediately after the war from medal leftovers and ribbon scraps for bartering/selling to occupation troops. Still, collectable bits of history.

            Hello Guy,

Very nice Deumer display board. I have one that is very similar to yours. It is not uncommon to find some of the medals suspended from incorrect ribbons. In many cases they used whatever scraps of ribbon were still available.

            Best regards,
            Tom

Well you dont want to make that mistake again...and although I never clean much of anything...I think the zinc pest treatment would help the shield and the west wall...the rest I would not touch some of the ribbons are not correct as you know...but they are all original IMO from what I can see...

I agree it is a Deumer display board and IMO it is an original wartime made piece.

Thanks for the comments Guys - yours is a lovely example Tom, thanks for showing. What surprises me about these, is that the medals were n't randomly selected, but there seems to have been a number of board types each with their own characteristic set of medals and badges.

Wow! Very nice, Greg. And with an F&BL Bomber Clasp mounted upside down in the #1 spot. Thanks for posting that. This is only the second Deumer display board I have seen with a Bomber Clasp.

                      Best regards,
                      Tom

Look at Greg's #5 slot... It is a Prussian Imperial General Service Medal? Thats where the 12 Year Long Service commonly goes... Interesting..

                        Thank you, Scott

It is imperial but not Prussian, its a Sachsen Friedrich August medaille. And of course it has the wrong ribbon.
