Ribbon bars don't fall apart that easily, even ones that are 100 years old.

The back plate has that wierd "V" cut where the catch used to be. Then a brass piece of metal has been soldered on to replace it?

One of the top pin retaining holes on the back plate has also snapped off.

The two long service ribbons could have been the wrong way round at some point, and possibly switched around, thus breaking the little tab clips, and the person who owned it (Obv heavy handed), but still useful with thread and a needle put it back together again?

The guys last medal addition would have been around 1940 maybes, with the Iron Cross? then 5 years of wear and tear on top of that...

We will just never know for sure...

Here is my similar SS ribbon bar. Originally from the Late Rick Research. I believe it was only authorized for wear for a very short time.

The 4 & 8 year devices where allowed as part of the original statute of 30. Jan. 1938, but were proscribed sometime in early '41. This was part of a blanket ban on many of the devices that whilst we, as collectors find so cute & desirable, the officials of the Third Reich deemed as unnecessary clutter which was contradictory to their projected notion of "Mehr sein als scheinen". The SS-Sigrunen device for the 12 year (and theoretically the unbestowed 25 year) award was, however, still allowed to be worn indefinitely.

              Thanks John.

              The last two ribbons are:
              Hungarian WW1 Commemorative Medal,
              Bulgarian WW1 Commemorative Medal.

                Very nice Andrew.

Those plastic backed bars always seem to show signs of stress/damage to the pin retainer, I see you have a hair line crack running along there, which is a similar stress area to the plastic back bars that I have. It could be risky moving the pin incase it causes it to snap off completely. You have also lost your catch, was there evidence that they were glued in place, or just stuck in with the bond of the plastic?

                  Thanks for your reply Alan.

Plastic??? Well I must say that I never noticed that the backing was plastic. In fact I've never knew they were made as such. I got this ribbon bar only because it was a better deal at the time if I bought all 3 bars that were for sale. I originally only wanted the bar with all 3 NSDAP LS ribbons.

Anyway, here are some closer pics. The catch was missing when I got it.

                    Alan,
Could you please post one of your plastic backed ribbon bars. I'd like to see another.

                      Andrew,

A new thread might be a better idea, as this one is an SS designated ribbon bar thread

                      Happy to share examples though
