Rommel's Marschal Baton

    Rommel's Marschal Baton

    I read on a web page that Rommel's baton was given by General Eisenhauer to Marshal Zukov. Question is how would Eisenhauer have gotten Rommels BAton since he had died befor the war ended and I would think the Baton would have been in possession of the family. Did Eisenhauer steal it?

    i think the original one is in his home town - stuttgart - in a museum together with his medalbar and his knights cross + additionals.
    perhaps it was a gift from rommels son who was the former mayor of stuttgart.

      Hi Christian,

      In the middle of the 80's I had a meeting with a German man here in Rio de Janeiro ( now I presume he is dead because in this time he was an old man ). He lives in Rio in this time and he told me a strange story. In the 60's and part of 70's he works as movie photographer in Hollywood. When the film about Rommel, the name in Portuguese was Rommel the Desert Fox, was made with James Mason, they used the uniform (original) of Rommel, borrowed by his widow. They have made a copy of the uniform and, at the end of the filmings they returned the copy for the widow. Did you know this story? Is this possible/true?

      PS. If I remember well, this man was a German pilot in WWII.

        I read somwhere they did use his original tunic, and it was stolen during filming.

                if i'm right - it is in the "Haus der Geschichte" - "house of history" in stuttgart near the gallery of modern and contemporary are.
                if you are in stuttgart at the isa its with the train 20 minutes from the exebition area.

                  Frankly, I don't know why Eisenhower would have given the baton to Zukov... he certainly didn't deserve it. If anyone did deserve it, of course would have been Montgomery IMO. But with that said, I did go to Memphis, TN back in 1999 and see the "WWII Though Russian Eyes" exhibit and the baton was on display there as well as the LSSAH standarte which was thought to be lost.
