Is the problem that it is cast from a worn original ? The areas of natural wear, which should be smooth, have the same tiny casting pits as the unworn areas.

Just checking my own opinion out.

Hi Ian, these medals were not cast, but die struck with the die used from Steinhauer & Luck during the war. At some point (we don't know when) surfaced a "B" on these Memels... And we don't know when they were made, but probably post-war.
On the Memel book there's one chapter about the "B-Memel".
