SS 4yr Long Service Medal & IAB (opinions)

    Hello All!

I have a 4 yr SS long service medal & an IAB I would like to put up for discussion, however, I can't post pictures. Could one of you help me out? I would realy value expert opinions on these awards and any assistance I may receive. I am under the impression they are both authentic pieces. I will get an association membership as soon as I can so I can do this stuff for myself. But in the meantime, I can't seem to wait!

    Thanks!

IMHO, this is a good Deschler that has lost most of its finish.

The 8 years are easy but the 4 years are tough...I wish somebody could once and for all explain to me what to look for on the 4's.

                Hi,

It could be a highly worn original, plus the pictures aren't the best,
but it looks a little suspicious to me.
However, I just can't say for sure without better pictures.
The runes on the front do not have the sharp beveled edges that
you usually see on the Deschlers and the pebbling looks weak to me.
Also, the color seems odd, but it may be the photos.
Which photo looks the most accurate to it's natural color?
It should look like yellow brass as it does in the first pictures at the top,
but in the other pictures below, it looks more dull and dark in color.

John, the Deschler 4-year SS medals are just as easy to tell as the 8-year medals, if they are in real good condition. They are of the exact same quality and have the exact same features, such as the pebbling, size, measurement, and sharp, crisp details that match the 8-years perfectly.
If anyone would like to post pictures of my mint 4-year SS medal here for a good reference, just E-mail me at: FleetMac11@aol.com
and I will send them to you.
I have some good close-up pictures of it.

                Best, Chris

It is easy to weed out many poor quality fakes. The medal must be die-struck and look like a coin. Here is how to spot a better fake:

                  1) Look at the acorn caps. They must have cross-hatching. This weeds out a lot of fakes right off the bat.
                  2) The ribbon ring must be teardrop shaped and soldered at the bottom point.
                  3) The jump ring must be bevelled and soldered onto the medal as a separate piece.
                  4) The letters should not have any pits. This is typical of a cast repro.
                  5) The 4 year is painted black and a golden bronze underneath. I think the closeups above have washed out the color a bit and make it look almost beige. The golden color is evident in the full shots above.
                  6) The stippling is the most difficult area to master for both the collector and the faker. The 4 year stippling is a bit more defined than the 8 year stippling (which should look like a fingerprint).

Here is a shot of a P&L version with much thicker paint. Notice the taller jump ring:

                    Hi Curt,

The stippling on the P & L medals are certainly different from the Deschlers, but from what I can see with a 30X loupe, the stippling looks exactly the same on my Deschler 4 and 8 year medals, (size, shape and pattern style).
John is going to post my pics. I hope I don't have down size them too much.

                    Best, Chris
