I think noses are normal on this medal, but what do you think?

      And what about letter "G"?

and what about the letters "m"? A previous thread seemed to indicate that as a problem? Have you done a search on "memel"?

I don't like it the M's are wrong.

I feel much safer with the double acorn versions.

          Cheers,
          David.
At Rathau on the Aller, the CO of 5th Royal Tanks advanced on foot to take a cautious look into the town before his tanks moved in. He encountered one of his own officers, a huge Welshman named John Gwilliam who later captained his country's rugby team, 'carrying a small German soldier by the scruff of his neck, not unlike a cat with a mouse.' The Colonel said: 'Why not shoot him?' Gwilliam replied in his mighty Welsh voice: 'Oh no, sir. Much too small.'

Hello! But what about another version. I mean this medal from Detlev http://www.comail.ru/~antiglobalist//detlevsmemel.jpg please see letters "M" and "G". And also this medal from this forum http://www.comail.ru/~antiglobalist//me3.jpg. Specialists decided it's original. I can find this early forum if you want. Thanks. Robert

Yes, there is some debate about this medal.

Personally the only version I accept, and own, is the one that Terry posted.

                Cheers,
                David.

Hi Angiff. Personally I am not keen on this medal, and would not advise that you buy it if that is indeed what you are thinking. (better to have a positive yes than a maybe). Points against the medal being genuine are, too curved m especially in memel, point in the G too straight. Known originals have less of a straight point in the G with more of a curve at the bottom and slight tail at the tip (hope this makes sense). To my knowledge there are differnces in the style of the G but the one shown (my opinion only) does not fall into that. Hope this is of some help.

I concur with mrg's thread and agree that Terry's medal is for me THE definitive memel. All the court mounted ones are of this type and the one illustrated in Dr Doehle's 1943 book also are of this type with the 'crooked' G.

Thanks. Maybe I didn't understand you right, is it means that Detlev's medal is not good?

Who am I to argue with Detlev?

                        However,

It used to be the general concensus that Terrys medal was the accepted type around here. Then, fairly recently, it was noticed that Detlev was authenticating the other type. Some guys are happy to go along with Detlev on this others, myself included, prefer to stick to the type that everyone is happy with.

                        Hope that's of some help.

                        Cheers,
                        David.

Thanks David, however I understand that I understood nothing. Both versions are good... Best wishes, Robert.

Hi Angiff what you have to remember is that most copys come from an original source, with only the slightest of gave away signs to indicate fake. The one posted on your FIRST web page (although blurred) seems to have a very flat bottom looking G with no curve and a very straight looking point, and more rounded as if collasping in on itself looking m. These medals are very tricky and to my believe there are two,(one more accepted than the other looking G). When you compare an original and a good fake these points can be barely noticable.

                              Angriff,

For me there is only one correct type - the one Terry posted, however Detlev would disagree with me.

                              Cheers,
                              David.
