    Luftwaffe 25yr/12yr Long Service Bar

Been looking for a bar like this for a while.

Little longer than I like but I could not pass it up.

    Comments please.

    Tom/Pierce your expertise is appreciated.

    Hi Wayne,

    I like it!

Looks like you have been picking up some medal bars with Hanseatic Crosses of late. First that Prussian NCO/TR police bar with the Bremen Hanseatic Cross and now this Prussian officer's bar with the Lübeck Hanseatic Cross. Good going!

Interesting that this officer retained his Imperial long service decoration on the bar when it should have been swapped out for the Luftwaffe 25/12 combination. And it looks like the Kaiser Centenary Medal was incorrectly placed and used as a buffer to split up the Imperial long service decoration from the Third Reich long service pair. Apparently this guy was not too concerned with following the regulations to the letter.

I think it is a nice and very interesting medal bar to a Luftwaffe Officer/Beamter. The two different Luftwaffe eagle devices is noteworthy as well.

    Best regards,
    Tom

      Thanks Tom.

I cannot lay claim to the other bar you mention.

Wasn't me that snaffled that one.

I wondered about the other long service and why it was still there.

Good to know that you like it.

        Hi Wayne,

Sorry to hear that you didn't get that bar with the Bremen Hanseatic Cross. That one was really nice too. But at least you got this one with the scarcest of the three Hanseatic Crosses. Probably less than 10,000 Lübeck Hanseatic Crosses were awarded. (Bremen 20,000 and Hamburg 50,000)

        Best regards,
        Tom

The Wilhelm I Centenary Honour Medal 1797-1897 was issued on March 22,
            1897.

By my estimation the holder of this bar would have qualified for his original
25 year service medal in 1922.

Any chance he might be entitled to the 40 year wreath or is this impossible to tell?

              Hi Wayne,

I would say it would be impossible to know for certain unless we had an identification on this bar. I follow your reasoning on the years of service, but we can't really say for sure that this guy had unbroken service time from 1897 on. If we assume that his service was unbroken since 1897, then it stands to reason that in 1936 (when the Wehrmacht LS Decorations were instituted) he would be just short of 40 years of service and would immediately rate the Wehrmacht 25-Year LS Cross. If he was still on active duty in the middle of 1939 (when the 40-Year Oakleaves were instituted) he would have rated them for sure, assuming the unbroken service time previously mentioned. But we also can't know for sure whether this guy was still on active duty in 1939. He may have retired sometime between late 1936 and early 1939.

              Best regards,
              Tom

Superb bar, Wayne. This reminds me of a bar which was for sale a ways back on Winkler's site. Might be the same one.

                  Great pick up!

I think you are looking at someone who was not in service between the wars and was came back after 1934.
