Recent buy, Mint packeted Ost medal

    Hi all,

A very recent purchase, an absolutely pristine Ost medal complete with packet of issue, tissue paper and minty ribbon strip, also an award Document.

    Opinions most welcome.

    Best regard,

    Stuart

if it was in the packet since it was made... why is most of the silver wash and black gone?

Could be my photographs and the light reflection but the badge is very black indeed, not certain about the ' silver wash' ? Certainly not an expert and to be honest, i have no idea if the medal is completely original to the issue packet, an assumption really. It could indeed be that the medal was purchased separately and put with the packet, i guess I will never truly know the answer.
I am happy with it though overall, and just wanted to share it.

            Thanks,

            Stuart.

it's certainly an original.. perhaps it was stored in a humid climate or something?

for reference here is my ostmedal to show the "silver wash" I'm talking about

              and I hope I didn't come off dick-ish.
I really am curious as to why this might be.

Yes, I was just studying photographs of other originals and noticed many with the silvering as you mentioned , but I found others that look exactly like mine. I am happy with it, now i must figure the best way to display the group including the certificate without causing any damage.

                Best regards,

                Stuart

could mount it to a matte in a shadowbox using archival matte paper and archival photo corners (to mount the packet and award doc.)... using hidden pins to hold the medal and ribbon.

                      Stuart,
Here's a link below to provide you a list of makers and their marks. The Julius Maurer medals are apparently never marked with their number, but they are a known maker so yours may very well belong with the packet. I didn't scroll down far enough to see if they show photos of each one, but even if they do it may be difficult to say 100% that the two belong together as ost medals are so similar that they often can't be distinguished from each other. But then again, maybe Maurer does have something to do so, but you can check it here - http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=julius+maurer.

As to why yours has lost so much of the silver and bluing, well, that's too complicated for my simple brain to explain in great detail. But in general, zink medals and badges tend to absorb their finishes over time. Many factors affect this, to include exact composition of the zink and finishes, storage factors such as humidity, etc. For yours, I would suspect that humidity wasn't the biggest factor if the medal was always stored in the envelope as there would probably be more signs of this effect on the envelope itself, i.e., some staining or outlines of the medal, etc. But if they medal wasn't kept in the envelope then it would make more sense for why your envelope is so mint.

Wish you success in your search through the thread, or maybe a true ostmedaille expert will chime in here and answer whether or not they belong together.

                            Hi Stuart,

Nice #138 Ost medal set! It is a shame when such a minty medal has lost it's finish to time. Zinc based awards often have some loss of finish. My challenge continues to be to find examples of Ost medals from each maker with finish remaining. Enjoy the Ost set!
