Sure Looks more like a sand casting to me....notice all the pitting everywhere , and the lettering is not crisp...but the catch plate appears original, but has been sloppily refitted IMO. Ribbon appears ironed . (we agree to disagree) Not what minty means in my book.

I would have to disagree. The very good and crisp close-up photo tends to exaggerated the natural pitting of stamped Iron. (hope fully this one is magnetic)

Like others said these where never meant to be looked under a microscope so such (dare I say Imperfections) are normal. The crispness of the lettering will vary from the first stamp to the 1000000th I would assume this is a latter stamping.

A side on view of the rim will tell us for sure it is was case.

Can't comment on the medal, but I love the sheen on those really silky, cornflower blue ribbons. I have a mounted SS 8year with this type of ribbon and it's quite difficult to capture the beauty of the watered silk on on camera.

I am assuming this medal was scanned?

If so that is why you see EVERY detailed imperfection... scanning picks up more than the eye, or camera for that matter, will ever see.

Also if the scanner plays with the contrast a little it will highlight odd things giving the overall medal a strange look.

That's my guess anyway - I think a great conditioned original.

This is camera foto. Medal non-magnetiс.

I am pretty certain that these Police Medals should never be found in iron: only silvered tombak-bronze or silvered white metal.

I agree, though, that all medals will display surface imperfections when enlarged/magnified to this degree.

                      Best regards,
                      Tom

Thanks Тоm, for you the authoritative opinion. I too considered that the medal wasn't made of metal. Weight: 22,06 g.

                        Kind regards,Mikhail.

                          Hello Mikhail,

I hope you don't mind me using your original scans to illustrate a point.

In these images, Mikhail's medal is shown in its actual size of approximately 38mm in diameter. The surface imperfections are still there, but unnoticeable. This is how a medal is meant to be viewed: in its actual size with the naked eye.

These medals were meant to be worn on a uniform by soldiers, not to be viewed under microscopes by collectors.

Even what appears to be the smoothest surfaces to our eyes will look like the grand canyon when viewed under a microscope.

                          Best regards,
                          Tom

Beautiful medal and interesting thread... I agree, there are times I really enjoy a medal and then take a photo and when I post on here I am thinking, "wow look at all the imperfections." The reality is any of us can now afford really tight zoom cameras that will show a close up with flaws.

                            Thank you, Scott
