Medal bar backing cloth

Probably and dumb question but does the backing cloth on a medal bar always signify the wearers branch of arms?

The reason I ask is because I have a trio (EK2 39, 4year service, Sudetenlad w. prague bar) that has a very dark blue (almost black) backing cloth.

That would make me say KM but I thought it odd that a sailor would have a Sudetenland medal. Wasn't that a land-locked region??

Then again, maybe the backing is black... did WSS medal bars have black or would they had fieldgrey backing? Did panzer troops use black backing??

Sometimes, I have two Luftwaffe and one Heer medal bar that are different shades of gray. I have a Russian front bar with a red backing and a Navy with a black backing. Regards Chris

I have a 1. Oktober 1938 medal Urkunde for a fellow who was a Maschinenobergefreiten on the Versuchsboot "Sundewall."

Thank you kindly, folks! Quite possibly then it's a KM bar but really who knows? It could have been the only backing material to hand at the time!

Didn't realise some KM boys would have been invited too... did they put an e-boat on the back of a truck like in carnival?

hey, Rick, maybe the backing cloth was to match their piping??
